Today Marks 410 Years Since the Death of Our Good Queen Bess.

Born in 1533 to Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, Bess was Queen of England from 1558 to her death in 1603. She inherited the throne after the death of her half-sister, Queen Mary (Bloody Mary). Her reign is often called the Elizabethan or “Golden Age” because it was a time period of great advancement and achievement in England. She has been called an outstanding politician, orator, tactician, and musician. Bess’ reign was marked by her effective use of Parliament and the Privy Council, a small advisory body of the important state officials, and by the development of legal institutions in English counties. During her reign, Bess unified a Protestant England against the Catholic Spanish and defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588. She was responsible for English exploration of the New World and the flourishing of the economy, making England a world power. Her reign was also noted for the English Renaissance, an outpouring of poetry and drama. Bess’ court also became a center for poets, musicians, writers, and scholars.

Bess retired to Richmond Palace, her ‘warm, snug box’ in March 1603. Her death was preceded by physical weakness and mental depression, but there were no overt causes. She was almost seventy years old, ancient for her time. She rested in a low chair by the fire, stubbornly refusing to let doctors examine her. As the days passed, her condition slowly worsened. She stood for hours on end until finally she was persuaded to lie down on cushions on the floor. She rested there for two days, not speaking. A doctor came near her and asked how she could bear the endless silence. She replied simply, ‘I meditate.’ For the third and fourth day, she continued to rest in silence, with a finger often in her mouth. Her attendants were terrified. They tried to get her to move but she refused. The younger Cecil visited and said, ‘Your Majesty, to content the people, you must go to bed.’ With some of her old spirit, Bess replied, ‘Little man, little man, the word must is not used to princes.’

Finally, Bess grew so weak that her attendants could carry her to bed. She asked for music and it brought her some comfort for a while. Her councilors assembled and asked if she had any instructions regarding the succession. She made a sign when Cecil mentioned the King of Scotland. It was enough. Cecil returned to his office to begin the paperwork for the new monarch.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Whitgift, whom Bess had once called her ‘little black husband’, arrived to pray. He was old and his knees ached painfully, but he knelt at the royal bedside until she finally slept. She slept on into the early hours of March 24 until, at last, as her courtiers watched and waited, her steady breathing stopped.

‘Her Majesty departed this life, mildly like a lamb, easily like a ripe apple from the tree.’

Being a girlfriend.

Being a girlfriend is not just about being beautiful and attractive for your guy. It’s not just about letting him chase you, letting him do sweet things every time you’re mad at him and not just receiving flowers and gifts during your anniversaries. It’s not about doing those girly things just to get his attention and not just about feeling mighty every time he did everything you want. It’s also being an emotional partner wherein you support him in every opportunity that he takes, you appreciate everything that he does for you and you thank him for doing it, you remind him on the things he must do and what he must not. Just because you know that you can always keep him on his feet, doesn’t mean you can manipulate him. You understand him not just as a partner but as individual too. you help him in every way showing him, that in a relationship, there’s no “I” or “you”, there’s only “we” and “us”. You know also that a man has their ego, and even when it become a little irritating sometimes, you still understand that it’s a part of his nature. A girlfriend is not just a term, it also has responsibilities that every girl must know. You’re a friend, a sister, a second mom, a teacher, and a best friend.
